James Hutchinson, our Managing Director, recently shared his thoughts on leadership, growth and decision-making in a piece for Insider Media, reflecting on why Woodstock Homes chose growth over caution during a period of unprecedented uncertainty.
Against a backdrop of Brexit, Covid-19, rising interest rates and inflation, many businesses chose to delay investment and wait for greater certainty before making important decisions. Woodstock Homes chose a different path. As James writes, it was one of the best decisions the business has made — not because the risks weren’t real, but because “certainty rarely arrives before a decision is needed.”
That thinking led directly to two significant steps in the business’s development: the creation of Woodstock Partnerships, opening up alternative sales channels and reducing reliance on the traditional open market, and Woodstock Strategic, giving the group greater control over its future land pipeline. Neither decision came with guarantees, but both have proven instrumental in strengthening the business and creating new opportunities.
The piece also explores what leadership looks like in practice. As James puts it, experience “doesn’t remove uncertainty” — it simply builds the confidence to make decisions in spite of it, drawing on a strong team willing to challenge and question along the way.
